Music is used in movies not only for entertainment but also to provide a sense of continuous narrative and as a signature of the characters and their emotions. As Frozen’s soundtrack was being saluted for its music, it is important to note that Walt Disney has produced many other films with great soundtracks. Therefore, this article will include my top favorite Disney songs throughout the years.
- “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” The Lion King(1994)
The Lion King has been ranked by many critics as the best Disney movie. Starting from the opening scene of The Lion King, you can tell that you are watching a unique movie. The music is does not follow the typical Disney criteria. It does not open with a princess singing; quiet music in the background or a narrative with tinkling. Instead, it opens up with a loud sound.
“Can You Feel The Love Tonight” was written by Tim Rice and composed by Elton John. The song managed to sell 11 million copies worldwide. It was a hit in the U.S., reaching number four in the chart and even more successful in France, reaching number.
- “Stranger Like Me” Tarzan(1999)
It’s almost impossible to find an answer to the question of which song on the soundtrack is the best. However, if I had to pick it would be, “Stranger like me” sang by Phil Collins. The song is about Tarzan’s fascination with Jane and Mr. Poter who are humans, but different than Tarzan and his lifestyle. The album helped Phil Collins become successful in his career and reached number one while earning $2.5 million.
- “A Whole New World” Aladdin(1992)
Aladdin’s soundtrack is brilliant, but “A Whole New World,” is my favorite. The song is a conversation between the main characters Aladdin and Jasmine about the new world they are going to discover while being on the magical carpet. It won an award for Original Song at The Academy Awards. In fact, it was the only Disney song to win a Grammy Award for Song of the Year at the 36th Annual Grammy Awards.
- “Reflection” Mulan(1998)
The song is recorded by the singer Lea Salonga as Mulan. The song helps in expressing Mulan’s feelings as it is performed after failing in impressing her matchmaker. The lyrics show the way Mulan feels about revealing to the world who she truly is, instead of wearing a mask. However, she is afraid to disappoint her family.
- “I See the Light” Tangled(2010)
This song was written by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater for the animated feature film Tangled (2010). In spite of its controversial reviews, “I See the Light” has got many awards. Including Academy and Golden Globe awards for Best Original Song in 2011. Moreover, it won both the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media as well as the Las Vegas Film Critics Society Award for Best Song. In addition, the song has been covered by many famous artists, for example the performers David Harris and Lucy Durack, and classical singer Jackie Evancho.
- “How Far I’ll Go” Moana(2016)
“How Far I’ll Go” is a song from Disney’s new 2016 animated film Moana. It was performed by American singer Auli’i Cravalho, supporting her role as Moana. Also, Canadian singer Alessia Cara sang the song for the soundtrack. The song was nominated for Best Original Song at the 89th Academy Awards and Best Original Song at the 74th Golden Globe Awards.
